“The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux was first published as a newspaper serial in “Le Gaulois” from September 1909 to January 1910. It was subsequently released as a novel in March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte & Cie in France. The English translation by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos was published in 1911 in the UK by publishers Mills and Boon, introducing the story to English-speaking audiences. The novel’s popularity led to numerous adaptations, including stage plays and movies. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation, which premiered in 1986, became a global phenomenon.
