A first English edition, first printing of A Raw Youth by Fyodor Dostoevsky, published by William Heimemann, London in 1916, translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. A near fine copy, internals free from inscriptions, in the original publisher’s scarlet cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine, front board with light handling wear and blind stamped roundel, publisher’s logo blind stamped to the rear panel, with slight pushing to the head of the spine and some fading to the spine with dulled gilt, browning to text blocks, otherwise with very minimal spotting, internal split to front inner hinge of paste-down, buckling to the body of text block throughout.

A Raw Youth by Fyodor Dostoevsky, also known as The Adolescent or An Accidental Family, explores the tumultuous life of Arkady Dolgoruky, an illegitimate son seeking identity and purpose. Through Arkady’s complex relationships with his father, Versilov, and other characters, Dostoevsky delves into themes of ambition, morality and the quest for self-discovery. The novel, rich in psychological insight and social critique, reflects Dostoevsky’s mastery in portraying the struggles of human existence.
