First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1952. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper has unfortunately been price clipped at all four corners, though retains the price of 7s. 6d. net. The illustrations are markedly bright, though the top and bottom panels are chipping slightly, with some accompanying creases. This being said, the spine is slightly sunned. The boards are also slightly faded at the spine, though the motif and titling are bright and clean. The text blocks are pristine and free from foxing. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition.
The last major work of fiction written by Hemingway that was published during his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba.
In 1953, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and it was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954.
