First edition, first printing of ‘Lottie and Lisa’ by Erich Kastner. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1950. A near fine copy. The book still has the rich, orange topstain. Neat previous owner’s name to the top of the front pastedown. In the very good clipped wrapper which has a little light soiling throughout. Some light chipping to the spine tips and corners.
“Lottie and Lisa” (original title: “Das doppelte Lottchen”) is a children’s book by German author Erich Kästner, published in 1949. The story revolves around two identical twin sisters, Luise Palfy and Lotte Körner, who were separated at birth when their parents divorced. By a twist of fate, the girls meet at a summer camp and are stunned by their identical appearance. Realising they are twins, they decide to switch places to experience the lives they were missing and to reunite their estranged parents.
The story is a heart-warming tale of family, identity, and reconciliation, showcasing Kästner’s talent for blending humour with serious themes. “Lottie and Lisa” has been adapted into numerous films and stage productions, most notably the 1961 Disney film “The Parent Trap,” which brought the story to a global audience.
