A first UK edition, first printing of The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim, with colour frontispiece after a water-colour by Hon. Lady Mallet, published by Macmillan, London in 1922. A near fine book without internal inscriptions, in original publisher’s green cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine, some pushing to the head and foot of the spine and also fading to the spine, the boards rubbed at the edges with bumping to the corners of the front and rear panel, browning to the text block, binding is a little slack with webbing exposed at the hinge of front free end paper and paste down, heavy browning to the front and rear free end papers, top corner of the front free end paper clipped.
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim was first published in 1922. It gained immediate popularity, becoming a bestseller and receiving critical acclaim for its charming narrative and evocative depiction of Italy. The novel tells the story of four English women who rent a villa in Italy for a holiday, seeking to escape their mundane lives. Through their journey of self-discovery and transformation, von Arnim explores themes of friendship, love and the rejuvenating power of nature.
Since its initial publication, The Enchanted April has been adapted into plays, films and even a musical, cementing its status as a beloved classic.
