A fine letter to E. Stanley Jones from Douglas Mawson, on the paper of the Royal Societies Club, St James’s Street SW1, dated 11 March 1929, written in blue ink on ivory white paper, with central horizontal crease, several vertical creases, small blue adhesive mark to verso.

In full: ‘E. Stanley Jones Esq. Dear Sir, I was a member of the first Shackleton Expedition (1907-09). Subsequently I organised an Australian Antarctic Expedition, which has proved to have been the most extensive of the Antarctic expeditions to-date. The reports are being issued by the New South Wales Government – they will be completed in almost 3 years time. A popular account of that Expedition was published during war time as a 2 volume 36/- book by Heinemann… as “The Home of the Blizzard”. Yours faithfully, D Mawson.’

Sir Douglas Mawson 1882-1958 was an Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer who led pioneering scientific expeditions in the early twentieth century. He helped map vast regions of Antarctica during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, enduring extreme hardships including a famous solo survival journey. Mawson later became a respected academic and advocate for scientific research. Knighted for his contributions, he helped establish Australia’s lasting presence in Antarctic exploration and advanced understanding of polar geology and environment.
