Desmond Morris – The Naked Ape – First Edition 1967
£235.00
First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1967. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper has some slight closed tears on the top edge and though it has been price clipped, retains the original 30s net price. The boards are finely bound in three-quarter cloth with a green back strip. The gilt titling is clean and bold. The internals are clean and free from inscriptions. The text blocks are bright and white throughout and free from foxing. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy.
The Human Zoo, a follow-up book by Morris that examined the behaviour of people in cities, was published in 1969. The Naked Ape, which was serialized in the Daily Mirror newspaper and has been translated into 23 languages, depicts human behaviour as largely evolved to meet the challenges of prehistoric life as a hunter-gatherer (see nature versus nurture).
