Daisy Ashford – The Young Visiters – First UK Edition 1919 – SIGNED and DATED
£1,250.00
A first edition, first printing of ‘The Young Visiters’ published by Chatto and Windus in 1919. A near fine bright book in the elusive dust wrapper, which is a little soiled and nicked and browned to the spine – SIGNED on the day of publication by Ashford to the half title page ‘Daisy Ashford/Nov. 15th 1919’.
Originally written in 1890 by Daisy Ashford when she was just nine years old. The hand-written manuscript, complete with unconventional spelling and punctuation, was kept by her family and largely forgotten. In 1919, encouraged by friends including J. M. Barrie, Ashford agreed to its publication with the text left essentially uncorrected. Its accidental humour, naïve narrative voice, and parody of adult society delighted readers. The book became a literary curiosity, celebrated as a unique example of childhood imagination preserved intact.
