Cormac McCarthy – The Orchard Keeper – First Edition 1966
£1,500.00
First edition, first printing of The orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy, published by Andre Deutsch in London, 1966. This is a near fine copy with previous owner’s inscription in blue ink, and similarly erased inscription in black ink, to the front free end paper, boards bound in publisher’s original red cloth with gilt titling to spine, slight pushing to spine tips, browning text block with some spotting. In near fine price clipped wrapper with some browning and handling wear, chipping to spine tips and knuckles of front and rear flap folds. Jacket design by Stewart Black.
The Orchard Keeper, Cormac McCarthy’s debut novel, is a haunting, atmospheric tale set in rural Tennessee during the inter-war period. It follows the lives of three characters: a reclusive orchard keeper, a young boy, and an outlaw, whose paths unknowingly intertwine around a hidden crime. McCarthy’s lyrical prose captures the rugged landscape and the isolation of the characters, exploring themes of nature, survival and the impact of a vanishing way of life in a changing world. It won the 1966 William Faulkner Foundation Award for notable first novel.
