A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1957. A very good book with one neat name to the head of the front endpaper – with some spotting to the board edges in a very good (or better) clipped wrapper, with rubbing to the spine and to the edges of the wrapper – some internal tape repairs and one small chip to the head of the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the title page, ‘To Wendy Bayliss/with best wishes/Christopher Landon/November 1956/. A much better example than is usually found and scarce signed.

The story is set during World War II and follows a group of individuals as they attempt to escape the deserts of North Africa and reach the safety of Alexandria, Egypt.

The central characters include a British Army officer named Captain Anson, a South African officer named Captain Van der Poel, a nurse named Sister Murdoch, and an Army Corporal named John. They are stranded in the Libyan desert after their ambulance breaks down. With the German Afrika Korps advancing, they must make their way to Alexandria to rejoin the British forces. The journey becomes perilous as they face not only the challenges of the harsh desert environment but also the threat of enemy patrols and the strain of their own internal conflicts. As they travel in an old ambulance nicknamed “Katy,” they must confront their personal demons and work together to survive.

The novel explores themes of camaraderie, sacrifice, and the human capacity to endure under extreme circumstances. It was adapted into a successful British war film in 1958, also titled “Ice Cold in Alex,” which further popularised the story.
