First US edition, first printing. Published by Southern Illinois University Press in Illinois (you guessed it!), 1983. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper, illustrated with a frontal image of Mr. Bat, has some slight wear throughout. The top and tail of the spine are slightly chipped. The corners are also marked, though not notably. It has not been price clipped. The boards are tight at the hinges and only lightly bumped at the spine tips, finely bound in quarter-cloth and paper. The text blocks are clean throughout. This is the author’s own copy, as inscribed so. The inscription, present on the front fly leaf, reads: “Christianna Brand, my own copy” in red ink. The following inscription, in black ink, reads: “Well, it is bad I give it to Robert Barnard with my love. Bad day at Black Rock – but he calls up and has a natter so it’s as good as a bitter complain (con ginno [?]) any day. Thank you. love Q superatium. 22. 4. 1985. And love is Louise, of course.” Another tricky inscription to decipher, thanks to Christianna. This is a fine and lengthy inscription, again outlining the pair’s companionship. IN ADDITION, Brand has highlighted the following passage on page viii, ‘Michaels described Christianna Brand as “a lady whose public persona is a delicious blend of Agatha Christie and Barbara Cartland. The Christie…just a touch of Gracie Fields ought to be mentioned….” – Brand has written ‘oh my God!’ in the margin and included the footnote, “ Agatha C was speechless, as to B. Cartland I am speechless – and as to darling Gracie, I can’t sing a note. Nor am I North Country.”
Overall, this is a very good (or better) book of a very fine association copy.
‘The best short mystery stories of Christianna Brand’.
