A first edition, first printing published by Macgibbon Kee in 1966. A near fine copy, in a like gently spine-faded dust wrapper, unclipped and lightly rubbed at the edges and spine tips. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Hillard Elkins / with warmest wishes / from / Bill Naughton / London January ’66”.
Bill Naughton’s Alfie began as the BBC radio play Alfie Elkins and His Little Life in 1962 before being reworked into the stage play in 1963. The inscribee’s surname is therefore already embedded in the work itself, while the association is strengthened by Hillard Elkins’s role as Broadway producer of Alfie! An important theatrical and literary association copy of an iconic 1960s work.
