The 1974 film of Swallows and Amazons is a charming and largely faithful adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s classic novel, directed by Claude Whatham. Set in the Lake District in 1929, the film captures a sense of innocent, old-fashioned adventure, where children are given immense freedom. It follows the Walker children (“the Swallows”) as they camp on a lake island and engage in mock pirate battles with the local Blackett sisters (“the Amazons”).
