Arthur Laurents – West Side Story – First Edition 1959
£275.00
A first edition, first printing of ‘West Side Story’ by Arthur Laurents, published by Heinemann in 1959. A very good book without inscriptions, with a little spotting to the page edges. In a very good unclipped wrapper with closed tears to the front panel and small stain to the rear panel.
West Side Story is a novelization by Irving Shulman, based on the 1957 Broadway musical by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents. The story is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, set in 1950s New York City. It centres on the tragic romance between Tony, a former member of the Jets gang, and Maria, the sister of the leader of the rival Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks. Their love is doomed by the intense rivalry and violence between the gangs. The novel captures the themes of love, prejudice, and social conflict, highlighting the struggles of urban youth.
