First edition, first printing of ‘Magpie Murders’ by Anthony Horowitz. Published by Orion in London, 2016. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper is nicely illustrated by Sinem Erkas but suffers with some slight curling and creasing at the top edge. It has not been price clipped. The boards are tight at the hinges and are free from chips and marks, although thin creasing to spine and one bumped corner relegates this from being fine. The text blocks are pristine. Overall, this is a near fine copy.

Anthony Horowitz’s literary career has spanned four decades across children’s literature, adult literature, film, television, and theatre. He is known for his versatile contributions to literature and television. He has penned numerous successful works, including the Alex Rider series, and has written extensively for television, creating popular series such as “Midsomer Murders” and “Foyle’s War.” Horowitz’s expertise in crafting intricate plots and engaging narratives is widely acclaimed.

“Magpie Murders,” published in 2016, is one of Horowitz’s standout adult novels. This book is a cleverly constructed murder mystery that pays homage to the golden age of detective fiction. The story features a unique dual narrative structure. At its core, it presents the manuscript of a traditional whodunit, written by fictional author Alan Conway, featuring detective Atticus Pünd. Surrounding this manuscript is a contemporary narrative involving Susan Ryeland, Conway’s editor, who discovers that the manuscript contains clues to a real-life mystery.

Horowitz’s novel is praised for its inventive format, intricate plotting, and homage to classic detective stories. It skilfully intertwines the two narratives, engaging readers with its meta-mystery approach. “Magpie Murders” not only showcases Horowitz’s mastery of the genre but also revitalises the traditional detective story with a modern twist, making it a compelling read for mystery enthusiasts.
