A first edition, first printing published by Constellation Books in 1952. Rebound in sumptuous green leather (mimicking the original Constellation binding) with raised black bands and gilt titling. A superb item.
“The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank has a notable publishing history. Anne, a Jewish girl in hiding during World War II, began her diary in 1942 while hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. After their discovery and arrest in 1944, Anne’s diary was left behind and later found by Miep Gies, a family friend who had helped hide them. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the family, published the diary in 1947.
The first edition was titled “Het Achterhuis” (The Secret Annex) and was released in Dutch. It garnered limited attention at first but gained international recognition when an American actress, Shelley Winters, gave a copy to a Hollywood producer. This led to a Broadway play in 1955 and a subsequent film adaptation. The diary has since been translated into over 70 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide, making it one of the most widely read and poignant accounts of the Holocaust. Anne’s words continue to inspire readers with her indomitable spirit and the horrors of that time.
