First edition, first printing. Published by Macmillan and Co. in London, 1950. This is a very near fine copy. Without the dust wrapper, the original buckram boards are bright and with very little note to wear aside from general shelf wear and light fading to the spine. The gilt tooling to the front panel and spine is mostly intact and bright, though the publisher’s name at the foot of the spine is marked. The text blocks are bright and clean throughout. It is handsigned by John Masefield in black ink, inscribed ‘For Audrey Napier-Smith, from John Masefield, January the 20th, 1953’. Opposing the full title page, Masefield has also pasted in a portrait of Swinburne, inscribing ‘Portrait by G.F. Watts. 1867’ in black ink. This portrait presumably came from a book of portraits, given the satin quality of the print. The recipient is whom the 1983 collection of ‘Letters to Reyna’ is dedicated. ‘Reyna’ is in fact Audrey Napier-Smith, the violinist and long-term correspondent of Masefield’s. Overall, this is a fine association with a touching, well-thought and sentimental artwork. This is a near fine copy.
