Agatha Christie – Ordeal By Innocence – First UK Edition 1958
£350.00
A first edition, first printing of ‘Ordeal By Innocence’ published by Collins in 1958. A fine book without inscriptions – a neat, large but rather beautiful bookplate to the front endpaper. In a fine unclipped wrapper with some rubbing to the edges and spine tips – what a beauty!
A crucial witness is unaware of his role as such until two years after a man is found guilty of a murder. When he realises the information he holds, he reopens the pain of loss in a family, and reopens the question of who was the murderer two years ago.
This novel received mixed reviews at the time of publication, as reviewers were not generally comfortable with the psychological aspects of the story. The plot had her “customary ingenuity” but lacked “blitheness” and was “much too like an attempt at psychological fiction”.
