A first edition, first printing of ‘Worzel Gummidge’ published by Burns Oates in 1936. A very good book without inscriptions with a smallish dark mark to the rear board. Lovely rich topstain is still present. In a very good wrapper which has very minor edge wear and shallow chipping and to the corners and spine tips. The dust wrapper is not price clipped and shows the correct price of 3s 6d.
Barbara Euphan Todd’s “Worzel Gummidge” has left an indelible mark on British culture since its debut in 1936. The whimsical tales of the mischievous scarecrow, brought to life with Todd’s charm and wit, captivated generations of readers. The series’ cultural impact expanded with television adaptations, notably in the 1970s and ’80s, starring Jon Pertwee as Worzel. The character’s enduring popularity and iconic status in children’s literature reflect Todd’s ability to blend fantasy with gentle morality.
