A first edition, first printing of Nights At The Circus by Angela Carter, published by Chatto and Windus, London in 1984. A near fine book, erased former owner’s inscription to the front free end paper, bound in original publisher’s crimson cloth with gilt titling to the spine, the text block with slight browning and damp-stain to bottom edge. The near fine wrapper with some bumping to head of the spine and knuckles of the front and rear flap folds, minor damp-staining to rear flap and similarly some internal damp-staining to upper and lower edge. Wrapper illustration by Barbara Kaiser.

“Nights at the Circus” is a novel by British author Angela Carter, published in 1984. The story follows the remarkable life of Fevvers, a winged circus performer, in a fantastical and magical realist setting. The novel blends elements of post-Victorian London with surreal and mythical elements, exploring themes of identity, sexuality, and feminism. It offers a rich narrative that combines elements of fantasy, social commentary, and allegory, with a cast of eccentric characters and striking imagery. The narrative is structured around Fevvers’ journey and self-discovery as she navigates the circus world and grapples with her own mysterious origins. Angela Carter’s “Nights at the Circus” is celebrated for its unique and imaginative storytelling, often regarded as a feminist masterpiece.
