George Orwell – Animal Farm – First Edition 1945
£7,500.00
A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1945. A very good book (or better) with one neat name and date inscription to the front endpaper. A little light staining to the edges of the boards – contents are clean. Slight cracking at hinges as is common. In a very good (or better) clipped dust wrapper which has benefitted by some restorative repair to the front panel and the edges by the world’s leading paper conservator. The ‘Searchlight Books’ advertisement printed in blue to the verso. Vibrant titles to the spine and now presenting as a near fine dust wrapper.
The release of ‘Animal Farm’ came shortly after the end of World War II and amid growing awareness of the atrocities committed by totalitarian regimes. The book’s timing and powerful allegory made it an instant success, resonating with readers worldwide. Orwell’s portrayal of political manipulation and betrayal remains a thought-provoking commentary on the dangers of authoritarianism and the corrupting influence of power. “Animal Farm” continues to be a timeless work that serves as a cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy and the potential for abuse of authority. First editions of this title are genuinely thin on the ground at present.
