D.H. Lawrence – Amores: Poems – First Edition 1916
£1,500.00
Duckworth, 1916. First edition, Roberts’ earliest issue with untrimmed pages and a sixteen page catalogue of adverts to rear. Original blue cloth with gilt titles, in review-laden dustwrapper. A very good example with a previous owner’s book plate to the front pastedown and a small name and date to the front endpaper. In the excessively scarce wrapper which is correctly priced at Five Shillings Net and has two chips to the head of the spine – one larger than the other, with a little chipping to the corners.
D. H. Lawrence’s second major collection of poetry and remains one of his most desirable early books. The true first issue was printed in an edition of around 900 copies and is distinguished by 16 pages of publisher’s advertisements at the rear, together with untrimmed edges. Issued in dark blue cloth lettered in gilt, many copies were later remaindered, making intact first-issue examples increasingly scarce. The collection was dedicated to Lady Ottoline Morrell and reveals Lawrence’s developing poetic voice, moving toward the sensual and emotionally charged themes that defined his later work.
