A first edition, first printing of ‘Little Wars’ by H. G. Wells published by Frank Palmer in 1913. A very good book without inscriptions – some spotting to the page edges. Complete with the tipped on Frontispiece – spine only faintly faded and all plates within as well as 111 pages included.
“Little Wars” is a set of rules for playing with toy soldiers and is widely considered a foundational text for the modern hobby of miniature war gaming. It provides simple, engaging rules for simulating battles using infantry, cavalry, and artillery, including a toy cannon that fires projectiles to knock over enemy figures. Wells wrote the book in a whimsical style, aiming it at “boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys’ games and books”. The current book is in superb condition – complete and only lightly faded to the spine. Exceedingly scarce.
