R.H. MOTTRAM – The Spanish Farm Trilogy – ‘The Spanish Farm’; ‘Sixty-Four, Ninety-Four!’; ‘The Crime at Vanderlyndens’ – First Edition Set 1924-26
£1,250.00
First editions. Three volumes. Octavo. Publisher’s red cloth, gilt to spines, top edges stained red. All housed in the original illustrated dust wrappers, the first volume featuring artwork by Vivien Gribble.
A well-preserved set, uncommon in such complete form, particularly retaining the jackets. The volumes remain in very good condition overall, with light wear to extremities, occasional offsetting to endleaves, and a slight lean to Volume II. Volume III shows a little more spotting to edges and preliminary leaves. A publisher’s advertisement leaflet is loosely inserted in Volume I.
The dust wrappers are, for the most part, very good: Volume I with light browning and minor creasing; Volumes II and III with some chipping at the spine ends and a little soiling to panels.
Provenance: Bookplate of Joseph Fisher Loewi to the front paste-down of Volume I.
Mottram’s celebrated trilogy, awarded the Hawthornden Prize, offers a distinctive and deeply personal perspective on the Great War. Introduced by John Galsworthy, who praised its restraint and authenticity, the work stands apart from conventional war literature in both tone and execution.
A scarce and desirable set, seldom encountered complete and in wrappers.
