FIFA World Cup 1966: three match tickets – Ayresome Park Tickets – Including North Korea v. Italy
London FIFA 1966
FIFA World Cup 1966: three match tickets from the quarter-final fixtures held at Ayresome Park, Middlesbrough, including the celebrated North Korea v Italy match.
A group of three original printed tickets for matches played at Ayresome Park during the 1966 FIFA World Cup, each retaining its counterfoil and printed with match designation, turnstile and seating details. Comprising Match 1 (Tuesday 12 July 1966), Match 2 (Friday 15 July 1966), and Match 3 (Tuesday 19 July 1966), all issued for standing sections within the ground, and accompanied by a contemporary season ticket wallet.
The third ticket (Match 3, 19 July 1966) relates to the now historic encounter between North Korea and Italy, one of the most remarkable upsets in World Cup history, in which the tournament debutants defeated the two-time champions 1–0 to progress to the quarter-finals. Contemporary tickets from this match are notably scarce, many having been discarded or lost, and examples with intact counterfoils are particularly uncommon.
Tickets from the 1966 World Cup are increasingly difficult to obtain, especially as coherent groups relating to a single venue and stage of the competition. The present set, anchored by the North Korea v Italy ticket, represents a rare survival from one of football’s most storied tournaments, culminating in England’s only World Cup victory, and is of considerable interest to collectors of historic sporting memorabilia.
Measuring 45.5cm x 33cm and framed using backing mount.
