Vita Sackville-West – The Dark Island – First Edition 1934
£750.00
A first edition, first printing of ‘The Dark Island’, published by The Hogarth Press in 1934. A very good (or better) book in like wrapper with a little chipping to the spine tips and to the corners. Any book that has a seagull on the front is good in my book….
Unlike West’s later historical and biographical works, this early novel explores themes of identity, emotional conflict, and spiritual isolation. The “dark island” serves as a symbolic landscape reflecting inner turmoil and desire. Written in a lyrical, introspective style, the book reveals Sackville-West’s interest in psychology and atmosphere, anticipating the emotional depth that would later characterise her more mature fiction.
