Eliot George – The Leather Boys – First Edition 1961
£185.00
A first edition, first printing of ‘The Leather Boys’ published by Blond in 1961. A near fine book in a very good anomalous wrapper with a particularly wide front flap (clipped and repriced) and a short rear flap.
A groundbreaking British novel set among London’s motorcycle subculture. It follows Reggie and his young wife Dot as their troubled marriage deteriorates, while Reggie forms an intense friendship with fellow biker Pete. The novel explores masculinity, sexual identity, class, and post-war disillusionment with unusual frankness for its time. Realistic and socially observant, it offered one of the earliest sympathetic portrayals of homosexual themes in mainstream British fiction. It was adapted into a 1964 film directed by Sidney J. Furie.
