Upton Sinclair – OIL! [There Will Be Blood] – First Edition 1927
£600.00
A first edition, first printing published by Albert and Charles Boni in 1927. A very good book with one neat name to the front endpaper. Some rubbing to the corners and to the edges – superb front cover illustration – spine titles are clear and bright.
A social and political novel about the rise of the American oil industry. It follows Bunny Ross, the idealistic son of a wealthy oil tycoon, as he witnesses corruption, labour exploitation, and class inequality. Through Bunny’s moral awakening, Sinclair critiques capitalism, corporate power, and political influence, revealing how greed and profit shape society and damage democratic ideals. The novel loosely inspired the 2007 film There Will Be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The film draws mainly from the novel’s early sections about the oil boom and ruthless entrepreneurship, while significantly diverging in plot, themes, and characters.
