Nancy Mitford – Voltaire In Love – First Edition 1957 – With ALS From Mitford Mentioning Voltaire
£600.00
First edition, first printing. Published by Hamish Hamilton in London, 1957. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper, designed by Cecil Beaton, has some mild separation at the top of the spine and slight separation at the bottom. The corners are worn and there are areas of loss to the spine tips and corners. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 21s. net price – some internal tape repair. The boards are mildly faded throughout, though the blue title label is bright. The text blocks are clean throughout. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in very good condition.
Accompanying the book is a two page ALS from Nancy Mitford, dated 11th Dec 63 on Rue Monsieur headed notepaper and reads, ‘Dear Mr Bengis, Thank you so much for sending the fascinating letter. At that time Voltaire wanted more recognition and honours than he was receiving from Louis XV and thought that if he could get a medal from the Pope it would further his cause as then nobody could say he was a danger to the Faith. I’m sure that’s his writing – will see what Besterman says I’ve sent it all to him, begging him to return it to you as soon as may be. Yrs sincerely, Nancy Mitford. I think, when the secretary wrote, he only signed V or Vol’.
A superb handwritten association.
Voltaire in Love is a popular history of the sixteen-year relationship between Voltaire and the Émilie, the Marquise du Châtelet.
