A first edition, first printing of The Years Between by Daphne Du Maurier, published by Gollancz, London in 1945. A near fine copy with dated inscription in blue ink to the front paste-down, pushing to spine tips and some tarnishing to the gilt title on the spine. In a near fine wrapper with fading and damp-staining to the front panel and spine, a surface scrape to the rear panel, toning to edges of rear panel and thin strips of toning to the exposed front and rear flap edges, chipping to the spine tips and knuckles of front and rear flap folds. With a contemporary Exhibitors’ Campaign Book publicising the film of The Years Between, featuring Michael Redgrave, Valerie Hobson and Flora Robson, Produced by Sydney Box and Directed by Compton Bennett, edges to the front panel rub-worn with chipping to the spine, several small apertures to the central crease throughout, missing upper right corner and closed tear to near edge, similarly to the rear panel promoting advertising blocks and posters.
The Years Between by Daphne du Maurier is a play about Diana Wentworth, whose husband, Michael, is reported killed in World War II. Grieving yet determined, she takes over his parliamentary seat, slowly building confidence and independence. When Michael unexpectedly returns, alive and embittered, their marriage is strained by conflicting identities and roles. The drama explores loss, rediscovery, shifting power within relationships and the struggle to reconcile past expectations with the person one has become.
