A set of first edition, first printings published by George Allen and Unwin between 1954-55. Comprising: [1] The Fellowship of the Ring – one of 2500 first state copies; [2] The Two Towers – one of 3250 first state copies; [3] The Return of the King – one of 7000 copies, with signature mark ‘4’ present on page 49 and lines ‘saggin’ in the middle. Originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond (The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11).
All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto. Original first state dust wrappers which have not been price-clipped and with no restoration. Small chip to the head of the wrapper of volume 1. Free from inscriptions. Increasingly scarce in such condition.
