William Goldman – The Princess Bride – First Edition 1975
£2,500.00
A first edition, first printing published by Macmillan in 1975. A fine book (a touch of spotting to the top edge) without inscriptions in a fine unclipped wrapper WITHOUT fading to spine – a little pushed to the tips. The book itself stamped Harcourt Brace Jovanovich to the spine (the US publishers) with inserted Macmillan title page as called for, as well as the unclipped dust wrapper showing £3.95 (also as called for) and with ‘M’ [for Macmillan] to the spine. Unaccountably scarce and far more so than the US first edition.
The book is presented as an abridged version of a fictional book by S. Morgenstern, and Goldman includes commentary throughout the story that tells the story of a young woman named Buttercup and her true love, Westley. Buttercup is engaged to the cruel Prince Humperdinck, but she is still in love with Westley, who disappeared years ago. When she is kidnapped by a group of criminals, including a vengeful Spaniard named Inigo Montoya and a giant named Fezzik, Westley comes to her rescue.
The book is a mix of adventure, romance, and humour, with memorable characters and a clever narrative structure. It also explores themes of true love, revenge, and the power of storytelling. Overall, “The Princess Bride” is a timeless classic that has captivated readers of all ages, which has been adapted into a popular film, directed by Rob Reiner.
