A first edition, first printing, published by Lehmann in 1952. A very good book with internals free from inscriptions, some spotting and browning on the front and rear free end papers, with former price written in blue ink on the front free end paper, browning and spotting to the text block, with front board and rear panel in general good condition, with some pushing to the head of the spine. In a very good clipped dust wrapper with some chips to knuckles of front and rear upper and lower panel folds, chips to the head of the spine and minor internal browning and spotting. The dust wrapper executed beautifully by John Minton.

The Commander Comes to Dine is a captivating short story set in an Italian village during World War II. When the commander of the occupying German forces unexpectedly visits a local inn for dinner, tension mounts among the villagers. Soldati masterfully portrays the complex dynamics of fear, resistance and survival as the characters navigate the delicate balance between compliance and defiance in the face of oppression. The story unfolds with suspense and nuance, offering poignant insights into the human experience during wartime.
