Up Against It is Joe Orton’s notorious unproduced 1967 screenplay written for the Beatles. Too anarchic, sexual and politically grotesque for their public image, it was rejected by Brian Epstein without comment. The plot mixes farce, murder, cross-dressing, war, religion and polygamy in a savage attack on respectability. First published posthumously in 1979, it remains a fascinating collision between Swinging Sixties pop culture and Orton’s gleefully subversive imagination.
