Published by Lawrence and Bullen, London in 1895 and is illustrated by William Strang and J B Clark, with an introduction by Thomas Seccombe. These are the humorous adventures of a fictional Baron but loosely based on a real baron, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Munchhausen that we think Raspe met whilst studying at the University of Gottingen. The book has had many editions and versions since its original publication in the late 18th century. This edition has 30 b/w plates very much in the Arts and Crafts style. There are also chapter headers and illustrated capitals and other in-text illustrations. Pale yellow cloth hardboards with an illustration of the Baron with a very large bow and arrow to the front board with title lettering in black. Black floral design on the spine with black title lettering. Illustration in black to the rear board also of the Baron flying on a giant bird. The book is in near fine condition with a previous owner’s contemporary bookplate to the front pastedown. Slight browning to the spine – an amazing survival from 1895 in superb condition.
