A first edition, first printing of Biko by Donald Wood, published by Paddington Press in 1978. A near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, boards bound in publisher’s original brown cloth with debossed graphic of the subject to the front board and gilt titling to the spine, pushing to the heel of the spine, light toning to the deckle-edged text block. In a near fine price clipped wrapper with fading to the spine and bumping to the spine tips, a small closed tear to the hinge of spine and front panel, some rubbing to the rear panel. Jacket design by Colin Lewis, jacket photography by Suzanne Rich.
Biko by Donald Woods is a powerful biography of Steve Biko, the South African anti-apartheid activist and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement. Woods, a white newspaper editor, first doubted Biko but became his friend and admirer. The book exposes the brutality of apartheid, Biko’s political vision, and the circumstances of his death in police custody. It is both a personal tribute and a courageous indictment of racial oppression in South Africa.
