A fine autograph letter from Douglas Soper, The Reverend the Lord Soper to E. Stanley Jones, 96 William Way, Letchworth, Herts, dated 22nd October 1981, typed on headed ivory writing paper – ‚’WLM Methodist Church, Kingsway Hall, London WC2B 6TA The Revd. The Lord Soper MA PhD’ – with one horizontal fold and signed in red ink, some creasing to the lower left hand corner.
In full: ‚’Dear Mr Jones, I am enclosing a signed copy of a photograph. A contribution to the West London mission would be most acceptable. Yours sincerely, Douglas Soper The Revd the Lord Soper.’
Donald Soper (1903‚Äì1998), Methodist minister, socialist peer and celebrated open-air preacher, became closely associated with the West London Mission, whose work among the poor he led with energy and conviction. Made Baron Soper in 1965, he used the House of Lords as a pulpit for Christian pacifism, temperance and social justice. A formidable controversialist, he preached at Tower Hill and Speakers’ Corner, arguing that faith demanded practical service to the vulnerable, voiceless and dispossessed.
