Description
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy young investment banker living amid the excesses of 1980s Manhattan. Obsessed with status, designer labels and appearances, Bateman conceals an increasingly violent and disturbing inner life. Combining savage satire, black comedy and horror, the novel attacks consumerism, greed and moral emptiness. Its deliberately repetitive descriptions of restaurants, clothes and possessions create a chilling portrait of a society in which identity has become almost entirely superficial.
