Robert Shaw – The Hiding Place – First Edition 1959 – The author’s first novel
£1,250.00
First edition, first printing. Published by Chatto and Windus in London, 1959. This is a very good copy – two names and one date to the front endpaper – some browning to the spine and a little spotting to the page edges. The dust wrapper, designed by John Woodcock, has some chipping and edgewear – some spotting and light staining to the rear panel and loss to corners, but has not been price clipped, showing the original 15s net price. The boards are free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are very good. Overall, this is a very good copy.
When the actor Robert Shaw wasn’t being killed by James Bond or wondering whether he should be on a ‘bigger boat’, Robert Shaw was a fine writer. So much so, that he was awarded the Hawthornden Prize in 1962 for ‘The Sun Doctor’. ‘The Hiding Place’ was his first novel and exceptionally scarce.
