A fine autograph letter from Robert Latham to Stanley Jones, dated 10th November 1975, written in blue ink on headed white writing paper – ‘Magdalene College, Cambridge CB3 0AG’ – with two horizontal folds.
In full: ‘Dear Mr Jones, It is good of you to write so kindly about the new edition of this diary and about your visit to the Library. Thank you. So of course, bring your wife to visit it – it is open every weekday… (incl. (sic) Saturdays) from 2.30 to 3.20 during Full Term. It closes on 6 Dec until 13 Jan. Yours sincerely Robert Latham’
Robert Clifford Latham (1912–1995) was a British historian, editor and Pepys scholar. After teaching at King’s College London and Royal Holloway, he moved to Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1970, becoming Fellow and Pepys Librarian in 1972. There, he cared for Samuel Pepys’s great library and diary manuscripts. With William Matthews, Latham produced the definitive eleven-volume edition of The Diary of Samuel Pepys, a landmark of Restoration scholarship. He was later honoured as CBE and FBA.
