A first edition, first printing of ‘The Blunderer’ published by The Cresset Press in 1956. A very good book without inscriptions in a very good (or better) unclipped wrapper with some light loss to the joints and corners. A very presentable copy indeed.
Walter Stackhouse, a successful but unhappy lawyer, becomes fascinated by a recent murder committed by bookseller Melchior Kimmel. When Walter’s troubled wife dies in circumstances resembling Kimmel’s crime, suspicion falls on him. As a relentless detective links the two men, Walter’s curiosity, guilt, and evasions make him look increasingly guilty. Highsmith turns a conventional murder plot into a tense psychological study of obsession, weakness, and the terrifying consequences of seeming guilty.
