Born in 1879, he led expeditions that mapped previously unknown Arctic areas and studied Inuit survival techniques, influencing modern understanding of Arctic nutrition and travel. He controversially advocated high-meat diets based on Inuit practices. Later, he became a lecturer and writer, helping shape Western perceptions of the Arctic during the early twentieth century and exploration history.
