Matilda First Edition Books

Such has been the success of Roald Dahl’s Matilda that to simply state that it is one of the all-time greatest Children’s Books is almost downplaying it.

Matilda Wormwood is only five years old, but she is a genius. Unfortunately her parents are too short-sighted to even notice.  To make things worse, the only person who seems to believe in Matilda – her teacher Miss Honey – is having her life made extremely difficult by the bullying headmistress Miss Trunchbull.  But what Miss Trunchbull doesn’t know is that this odd, lovable little girl has a trick or two up her sleeve to help out her friend, all whilst trying to find a better family to live with.

With the First Edition of the book released on October 1st 1988 sales alone have now reached nearly 18 million. Which in turn has encouraged the production of an audio reading narrated by Kate Winslet, a Radio 4 two-part programme, a feature film, two musicals (one of which picked up multiple Olivier and Tony Awards), and an animated series that has just been picked up by Netflix.

Illustrated by the great Quentin Blake, and written some 45 years after Dahl penned his first novel it now consistently and continually outsells any other of his publications, and is now well on the way to becoming his most popular piece of work, which is impressive when you consider that some of his other titles include Gremlins, James And The Giant Peach, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, Danny Champion Of The World, The Enormous Crocodile, The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Witches, Esio Trot, and The BFG.
