William Golding – Lord of the Flies – First UK Edition 1954
£2,750.00
E.M. Forster’s copy, with his book-label on front free endpaper, original cloth. A fine example now in custom-made drop-back box, 8vo, 1954.
A superb association copy, Forster was integral in bringing the book to publication and “Forster’s Choice” would appear on the publisher’s wraparound band for the book.
Forster was an early supporter of the book when first published in 1954 and talked Faber into taking on the unknown writer at the time. It was slow to sell, but with Forster’s naming it ‘outstanding novel of the year’, the book has since gone on to sell over 10 million copies world-wide. He later wrote the introduction to the 1962 edition, which led to correspondence and an ensuing friendship between the two authors.
