First edition, first printing of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, published by Bloomsbury in London, 2004. This is a near fine copy, free from previous owner’s ink, the boards are free from chips and marks and are sharp at the corners, with slight pushing to the head and foot of the spine, the text blocks with slight browning, spotting to the top edge and handling wear to the bottom edge. The near fine unclipped wrapper with some minor bumping to the upper and lower edges and surface marks to the front and rear panels and spine. Jacket design by William Webb and Portia Rosenberg.

The author’s debut novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, is a historical fantasy set in an alternate 19th-century England where magic is revived by two magicians, Mr. Norrell and his pupil Jonathan Strange. Their contrasting approaches—Norrell’s cautious, scholarly magic and Strange’s bold, intuitive spells—lead to a turbulent partnership. The novel intricately blends historical events with fantastical elements, exploring themes of power, ambition and friendship, while richly depicting a world where magic and reality intertwine.
