London Michael Joseph 1960

A first edition, first printing of ‘A Kind of Loving’ published by Michael Joseph in 1960. Signed by the author on the title-page, original cloth, dust-jacket with the Book Society wraparound band, slight fading to spine, light toning to flaps. With a press photograph and 2 tickets for ‘Voice Box’ at the Royal Festival Hall, 19 February 2004, one signed by the author, loosely inserted. Near fine in near fine.

Barstow’s best-known novel is a landmark of provincial realism, charting courtship, work, marriage and social expectation in a rapidly changing Britain. The presence of the Book Society wraparound band and the loosely inserted later material, including a ticket signed by Barstow, add attractive associated interest.
