A first edition, first printing of The Last Cigarette by Simon Gray, published by Granta Books, London in 2008. A fine copy free from inscriptions, in a similarly fine unclipped wrapper.
Published in 2004, The Smoking Diaries began when playwright Simon Gray turned sixty-five and started recording his thoughts with little concern for conventional diary form. Digressive, candid and mordantly funny, it ranges across cigarettes, abandoned drinking, theatrical triumphs and disasters, adultery, shame, friendship, family and ageing. Gray presents himself without vanity, transforming anxiety, irritation and regret into comedy. Beneath its casualness lies a poignant meditation on memory, mortality and the consolations of love and companionship.
