Description
Published in 2023, Study for Obedience follows an unnamed woman who moves to a remote northern country to care for her domineering brother. Her arrival coincides with misfortunes among the local people and animals, provoking the community’s suspicion and hostility. Narrated in eerily formal, self-effacing prose, Sarah Bernstein’s unsettling novel explores submission, guilt, inherited persecution, xenophobia and the unstable question of innocence. It won the 2023 Giller Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
