First editions, first printings. Published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson in London, 1977-80. This is a near fine set. The first two dust wrappers, though beautifully illustrated, have some mild wear to the top and tail edges. There is slight separation to the top and tail of the spines and some slight sunning to the second title. The third title is almost without wear aside from some slight fading to the spine. All three titles have not been price clipped. The first two titles are dual signed by the author. The first signature in both volumes is present on the front flyleaf inscribed to “Geoffrey and Cecily” and signed “Olivia” in blue ink. The second signature in both volumes is on the full title page and is flat signed ‘Olivia Manning’ in blue ink. The third volume is not signed. The text blocks are bright and white throughout. Overall, this is a near fine set of Manning’s classic Balkan trilogy. Currently the only signed volumes available on the market.
The story of a marriage and of a war, a vast, teeming, and complex masterpiece in which Olivia Manning brings the uncertainty and adventure of civilian existence under political and military siege to vibrant life.
