A first edition, first printing published by Chatto and Windus in 1978. This copy is signed to Mr Booker’, Martyn Goff and was the property of Rubio Lindroos, Goff’s partner. The book is very good+ and is inscribed on the title page For Martyn Goff with so much gratitude and so many thanks, Good wishes, Iris Murdoch. There are two ink inscriptions by Lindroos on the ffep and verso of the title page. Martyn Goff was the driving force behind the Booker Prize. Goff was a keen collector, as well as a book seller. He was the administrator of the Booker from 1970-2005. John Sutherland (chair of judges in 2005) the literary academic, wrote in 2002 that The current health of English fiction can be explained in two words:Martyn Goff. A superb association.
